meeting notes 2007

6/18/07

No update on the WebPac Pro schedule yet.

Laurel shared the answers to the questions about certain options fir the Ebscohost Inteface

  • Local Collections as Authorities -
  • Page composer - creates a webpage of the search results
  • Ask a Librarian - links to an email address
  • Show Clustered Results - currently Narrow by Subject.  By Journal and By Author are other options, but we aren't sure how those would display.

Laural will set up a test interface so that we can see how some of these options are presented.

We still want help from the Usability Team.  Maybe mid-July.

6/11/07

Not many postings in the forum yet.  Mike's and Laura's presentations have been linked.  Susan will add a poll feature and send out a reminder email to Library All.

Debbie will request WebPac Pro installation.  It will be after friday and within six weeks of the request.  We can pick 3 potential dates.  We need to send out an email to the library when the date is set.

The group reviewed the list of ebsco interface options that Laural prepared.  Kate Y. asked for clarification on certain items.  Laural will send out an email explaining the ones she will look up.

Forum update May 24, 10:00am 1.5hrs  "Future of the Catalog Information Session"

  • Mike Boock - openWorldcat &  UW
  • Terry Reese - LibraryFind as a catalog interface
  • Laura Zeigen, OHSU - WebPacpro
  • Should we discuss using a WordPress interface
  • Announcement to go out this week
  • Maybe a room in the MU.  Nothing else is available but Drinkward which is really too small
  • Clarify meeting objective. General discussion of possibilities & the future before we commit to a path (or a combination of paths). Need to clarify this is for information, not to make a decision then and there.
  • Agenda: Background. Speeches 10-15 minutes.  45 min for discussion.
  • Decisions go through us.  Some we would make a recommendation to LAMP.
  • Communication: Forum or bulletin board. Susan will check with Ryan on tools. Limelight/limewire.  Laurel will look it up and send out.
  • Background: Give context.  Tell what we hope to have come of it. We are implementing WebPacPro this summer.    LAMP will need to provide direction. We need to do something about our catalog, but for us, how much time and energy should we invest in WebPacPro if we ultimately go with something else.

EBSCOHost interface

  • Survey ref desk, COCC, subj librarians for concerns/ideas/input.
  • One big concern: when click on Acad Search Premier, does the user want to see the list first, or go to search right away.
  • 4 tabs worth of options and can tailor to each database
  • Business is the only one we have turned on the special search interface.  Easy to search for company name & info.
  • Order of search refinement options.
  • Have to go into administrative panel to see options.  Laurel will create a list for us to review and use to solicit input.
  • RSS feed readers don't recognize the proxied url.
  • can pick initial search interface: one box, 3 boxes, or visual search interface
  • We can select 3 different setups and have the usability team test them

Next week:  Plan for presentation.  Discuss bulletin board.

IUG Enhancement Lists
Debbie is collecting votes for our institution needs by 5 pm Wednesday

2 sections relevant to WebOPAC

Patron Functions - choose 5

  •  We dont let users modify their patron record, pf4,5 dont apply
  • not many of our users turn on reading history (PF11,12,13) - need to investigate - Debbie might be able to find out
  • reading history is a record of every book a user checked out. PF13 would include Summit checkouts as well

WebOPAC - choose 9

  • W4 - yes
  • W5 would be good, better than W2
  • W12 would be a good usability fix
  • W13, not relevant because we use ERM and can list multiple urls
  • W14 n/a we dont use genre
  • W17 n/a, we dont have Millennium Media
  • W20, WebPacPro feature - not sure about this
  • W22 n/a because we have Summit
  • W26 - yes
  • W28 - yes
  • W29 - yes

3/5/07

  • We need to clarify how we will proceed with our charge, timeline, processes, etc.  Kate Gronemeyer maybe joining the group, so we will table these discussions until she is present.
  • So far we have focused on the Catalog. EBSCOhost also needs addressed, but it is complicated and we will deal with that after we evaluate WebPac Pro.
  • Millenium:  There are login problems.  Susan and Kate need to get it installed on computer their computers.  The manual has usability issues, so if given a page number, use that to locate the desired info.
  • It appears that WebPac Pro adds functionality and it is free.  The only question would be if the relevancy ranking method used is sufficient. We want to install it and test it, but it will change the results on the live site from chronological order to relevancy-based. Jane will see if she can talk to RCIS about relevancy ranking changes at the meeting tomorrow. If we do this, we would like to do it over spring break. If not, then the week between Spring and Summer term. Instructors might have to modify their lessons, but will no longer have to explain that results aren't sorted by relevancy. We might want to change some of the record labels at this point too since some are very unclear, and increase the number of results per page.
  • So far everyone Debbie has talked to have like the results of WebPacPro, but modifying pages is time consuming. We will need to discuss if  we want to use Innovates pages or our own.  Puget sound is developing their own pages right now to be released in June.  To reduce disruption to users, we will save any page changes decided on until summer.
  • There are daylight saving time issues which are supposedly corrected by the latest update which Debbie will apply soon after getting a few questions resolved.
  • Susan will talk to Team 200 about if they have any significant changes which will impact the amount of time we want to spend on catalog pages.
  • What is the libraries' direction for the Catalog? Should we consider moving exclusively to alternatives such as LibraryFind or  WorldCat?  Jane suggested a forum discussion or debate. Different presenters can talk about OASIS & it's future (Mike Boock?), Summit & Worldcat, and LibraryFind).  We need to make clear that this is just for information, not for advocation.  A possible secondary session would be to invite others who have tried alternatives to get their opinion (OCLC & other universities)
  • Action items:  Laural: RCIS agenda, Jane: wiki space and list serve;  Jane and Laurel: forum discussion.  Susan: Team 200.  Debbie: release 1.2 fixes - will send a list of things that may impact us or the public.
