A Colour Atlas of Diseases of Lettuce and Related Salad Crops
By Blancard, D., H. Lot and B. Maisonneuve, Institut National de la Recherce Agronomique,France. Forward by Edward Ryder.
2006; hardcover; 8.6" x 11.6"; 376 pages; 513 colour photos; 22 colour diagrams; Published by INRA;
ISBN 1-84076-050-8; (2 pounds)

Small farms in the western valleys enhance their sustainability by marketing directly to consumers via farmers' markets, via community supported agriculture groups, farm stands, u-picks and by direct sales to restaurants, retail outlets and institutional cafeterias. Because high value lettuce crops (not ice-berg) are delicate, they do not stand up well to shipping and are a common enterprise contributing to these family farms. Disease is a concern in any agricultural enterprise; giving faculty and students access to this well-illustrated volume will enable us to provide support to these growers.

Sittig's Handbook of Pesticides and Agricultural Chemicals

Edited by Stanley A. Greene and Richard P. Pohanish

2005; 8.5" x 11" hardcover; 1,248 pages; ISBN: 0-8155-1516-2; (9 lbs.); Item No. 15162

This book provides, in one volume, a wealth of information on agricultural chemicals. I am especially impressed by the number of cross references contained in it (see contents on the website.) In addition to the chemistry, it adds the law, by providing extensive information on labeling, and also biology - allowable residuals and so forth. I have just completed the revision of an extension publication on pesticides and pollinators - a year's effort. Having had access to the many appendices, so much infomration at my fingertips, would've made the task easier. I found during the last year the library's holdings in this area to be insufficient. The Pesticide Manual, by the British Crop Protection Council is very good, but lacks the specificity to US regulations required. This book would fill that need.

Linda

Thank you for contacting me.
These are useful reference books, however, they cost about a quarter of budget in one department.

I will talk to the head of collection development, checking for the posibility of using gift money. Due to the nature of these books, they must be shelved at the reference area and for in library use only. They are very expensive and we want them to be used by as many people as possible.

You are welcome to come to the library and use them, we have study area around the reference shelves. You are also try to check out a study room, so you can work in  a quiet environment. Hope this help you.

Please order (if possible) and put on reserve for AREC 465 (Winter 2007) the following book (will be used in future years)

Agricultural Financial Reporting and Analysis by Oltmans, Klinefelter & Frey, most recent edition (which according to my knowledge is the first edition, ISBN 093026469X), Publisher: Doane Agricultural Services Company

The OSU bookstore might have it available.

Dear Linda

I talked to our head of collection development, she confirmed that these books have to be in the reference area and for library use only.  Since these two books will cost over $500, I can only buy one at a time.  There are many online sources for pesticide and Ag. Chemicals. I am sure you are aware of. Are you aware of any research funding in the project you are working on that will partially fund this purchase?

Regards

May

I have just sent in the request for ordering. I will need to look into the Reserve, it will take some time. From the book arrived at OSU Library to the reserve desk.

Thank you for using the library service.
